  29. 1. ∑ CHESS 5 LITE & PRO
  30.  
  31. ∑ Chess 5 comes in two different versions: ∑ Chess 5 Lite and ∑ Chess 5 Pro.
  32.  
  33. ∑ Chess 5 Lite is freeware and can be downloaded from the ∑ Chess web-site
  34. http://www.sigmachess.com. Certain high-end features from the commercial version are either
  35. disabled or limited in this free version. Nevertheless, it's a complete, full-strength chess
  36. program with many features; it's not just a demo. If you're a casual chess player without the need
  37. for special features, chances are that ∑ Chess 5 Lite will do just fine.

  39. ∑ Chess 5 Pro is not freeware, but a full featured commercial product. You must pay the $15
  40. fee in order to register and become a legal owner of this version (see below for details on how to
  41. register). Before deciding to buy and upgrade to the Pro version, we recommend that you stick
  42. with ∑ Chess 5 Lite for a while, and get familiar with the program. This way you won't end up
  43. paying for something that really wasn't what you expected.

  45. The division of ∑ Chess 5 into Lite and Pro versions resembles the shareware concept in many
  46. ways, but there are some important differences:
  47.  
  48. •  The Lite version is time-unlimited freeware: You can use it for as long as you like, not just for
  49.     e.g. 30 days as for shareware products.
  50. •  Although some features are disabled/limited in the Lite version, it is still a complete,
  51.     full-strength chess program.
  52. •  When/if you upgrade to the commercial Pro version by paying the small $15 fee, you'll not only
  53.     relieve your conscience (after all) and make the author of ∑ Chess happy :-), you will also
  54.     benefit from all the new features which were disabled/limited in the Lite version.

  57. 2. HOW TO REGISTER & UPGRADE TO ∑ CHESS 5 PRO
  58.  
  59. The price for upgrading to ∑ Chess 5 Pro is only $15. Registration and payment is handled via
  60. the internet payment service Kagi (www.kagi.com), and can be done in two ways:
  61.  
  62. •  Register online on the secure Kagi server at https://order.kagi.com/?1CU. Only payment by
  63.     credit card is accepted.
  64.  
  65. •  Start the Register ∑ Chess 5 Pro application, fill out the registration form and send it to 
  66.     Kagi: If you are paying by credit card, you can send the form via e-mail (to sales@kagi.com)
  67.      or fax (to +1 510 652-6589). Payments sent via e-mail are processed within 3 to 4 days,
  68.     whereas payments via fax take up to 10 days. If you are paying with cash or USD check you
  69.     need to print the registration form and send it to the address included on the form.

  71. In all cases, once your payment has been processed you will receive a confirmation e-mail from
  72. Kagi. A few days later you will receive another e-mail from the author of ∑ Chess containing a
  73. unique Serial Number and a personal License Key. In order to upgrade to ∑ Chess 5 Pro, you
  74. then simply click the "Upgrade" button in the ∑ Chess 5 About dialog and enter this license
  75. information. From then on ∑ Chess 5 will run in "Pro" mode with the full feature list enabled!

  77. All future updates to ∑ Chess 5 Pro are provided free of charge for owners of ∑ Chess 5 Pro.
  78. You simply need to download the new version 5.x.x and re-enter your license information.

  81. 3. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  82.  
  83. ∑ Chess 5 requires an Apple Macintosh or MacOS compatible meeting the following
  84. requirements:
  85.  
  86. •  Processor : Any PowerPC
  87.  
  88. •  System Software : Mac OS 7.5 or later. Native (Carbon) compatibility with
  89.     Mac OS X will come in a later version.
  90.  
  91. •  Monitor : 640 x 480 resolution or higher with at least 256 colours or grays.
  92.     However "Thousands of colors" or more is needed to use the 3D board.
  93.  
  94. •  Memory : At least 3 MB, but 5 - 10 Mb or more is recommended in order to take full
  95.     advantage of the transposition tables and the 3D board.

  98. 4. LIMITED/DISABLED FEATURES IN THE LITE VERSION
  99.  
  100. Various features of interest to serious chess players are limited or disabled in the freeware
  101. Lite version:
  102.  
  103. •   Collections can contain a maximum of 1000 games.
  104. •   Opening/position libraries cannot be edited.
  105. •   Only the KQKR and KBNK endgame databases are included. The commercial Pro version
  106.      contains several other 4-piece endings.
  107. •   Automatic game annotation/analysis are disabled for collections.
  108. •   Diagrams are not printed when printing collections/online chess books.
  109. •   Transposition tables are limited to 10 MB, whereas the commercial Pro version can handle
  110.      transposition tables up to a size of 160 MB.
  111. •   At most three windows can opened simultaneously.
  112. •   Monitor mode is not available.

  115. 5. LICENSE AGREEMENT

  117. Although ∑ Chess 5 Lite is freeware, it is copyrighted and NOT in the public domain. It may not be
  118. modified in any way and may thus only be distributed in its original form (the "sigma-chess-5.sit"
  119. file). It may not be sold, or included on a CD-ROM or any other physical media without explicit
  120. permission by the author.

  122. ∑ Chess 5 Pro is NOT freeware, it is copyrighted and may not be redistributed in any way: It's
  123. illegal to upgrade ∑ Chess 5 on two or more computers using the same Serial Number and License
  124. Key.

  126. Unless explicitly otherwise stated the above license also applies to all subsequent versions of
  127. ∑ Chess 5.x Lite & Pro.

  133. implied. By downloading, installing and/or using the ∑ Chess 5 software, the user/customer accepts
  134. all responsibility and agrees that the author of ∑ Chess cannot be held responsible or liable for any
  135. damage, data loss or harm of any kind whatsoever caused directly or indirectly by the installation
  136. and/or usage of the ∑ Chess 5 software.
